Notes from winemaker Aryn Morell:

Gorgeously complex with smoke, minerals, bacon fat, charcuterie and spicy black fruits. Some air lifts plum skin, currants, blackberries and savory notes of black olive and garrigue. The palate is full bodied with pressed black fruits, spice and a hint of tapenade, smoky minerals and a tannic spine. Our winemaker’s favorite GK Syrah to date!

Production notes

Sourced from Lawrence Vineyards, harvested October 2015.  This Syrah was fermented in 85% concrete tanks, 4% whole cluster.  Aged in 50% new French oak puncheons for 20 months.  Made from five picks and three different clones from the Scarline blocks.  Meant to deliver pure, dark and concentrated flavors.  Where the Vaucluse is meant to be slighly wilder and showcase some more savory notes, this wine is all about primary fruit with notes of smoke, bacon fat, and minerals.

Bright, dark medium ruby. Brooding aromas of blackberry, coconut, licorice, bitter chocolate and eucalyptus, plus a wild note of bacon fat. Fat, thick and concentrated, conveying a gamey nuance to its deep flavors of dark berries and spices. At once fully ripe and dry, this penetrating, classy wine finishes with very suave tannins and resin and spice notes. Really saturates the mouth and builds on the aftertaste. "My idea of Syrah," says winemaker Aryn Morell.

With a deep ruby core and dark purple skin tears, the 2015 Grand Klasse Reserve opens with a nose that is undeniably Syrah—bursting from the glass with smoked bacon fat, black peppercorn, olives and baked earth with a rusticity about the glass. Full-bodied, the wine is generous, spicy and full of flavor with a balanced structure and firm tannic backbone that will allow this to age for more than a decade. Flavors of blackberry skin, cinnamon spice and black pepper linger on the long, complex and drawn-out finish. Bravo, this is absolutely delicious and well worth the price.

Gård Vintners is 100% estate grown sustainably at Lawrence Vineyards in the Royal Slope AVA. Lawrence Vineyards features seven distinct vineyard sites with elevations ranging 930 feet to 1,675 feet. The combination of elevation and south-facing slope provides a great framework for grape production, while the diversity of the seven locations delivers a high level of complexity to Gård wines. Winemaker Aryn Morell, a Washington native, honed his skills in Napa Valley working with some of the country’s most notable producers, including Silver Oak, Joseph Phelps, Quintessa, Husic, Chimney Rock, Chappellet, Stags Leap and countless others in winemaking and the chemical engineering of wine as part of a consulting company for which he worked.

Aryn joined the Gard team as head winemaker in 2011, and spends considerable time in the winery’s estate vineyard with Josh Lawrence, Gard founder and viticulturist.  With an uncompromising attention to detail, Aryn carefully crafts Gard wines with an eye toward the unique expression of terroir of the estate vineyard, and earns frequent accolades and high acclaim for his wines.

In 2014, Aryn and Gard founders Josh and Lisa Lawrence launched a winemaking facility in Walla Walla, M&L Production, where all the Gård wines are produced, bottled and aged. Aryn also makes wine for Matthews Estate, Tenor, Alleromb and Mullan Road, a Washington project for Cakebread Cellars of California.
