Tasting notes

An exotic nose of raw honey, chamomile, creme brulee, and lemon curd. Swirling brings up caramelized peach and apricot, white tea and orange blossoms. The palate is extravagantly rich with perfectly caramelized stone fruits, brioche, lily petals, spun sugar and the ideal acidity to cut through the sweetness. This should be in any dessert wine connoisseur's cellar.

Production notes

Sourced from Lawrence's Corfu Crossing Vineyard, harvested December 17, 2016, 100% Riesling block 2, clone 9.  Barrel fermented for 14 months in once used French oak barrels before bottling in January 2018. It was fined and filtered prior to bottling.

Aromas of peachy fruit salad and lemon drop. Incredibly sweet and thick, but with a sappy, slightly high-toned quality and vibrant acidity keeping the wine from coming across as heavy. A superbly concentrated, tactile peach bomb with outstanding purity and length. A one-off, this Ice Wine has a moderate 0.7 grams per liter of volatile acidity and finished with 83 parts per million of total sulfur, which is low for a wine in this style.

Pale straw in color, the 2016 Riesling Ice Wine bursts out of the glass with notes of honey, peach purée, jasmine and ginger, with aromas of lemon panna cotta and quince paste. Medium to full-bodied, the wine coats the palate with pleasurable spice and sweetness and just enough acid to keep the balance in focus. The almost-sappy finish lingers with notes of quince puree, honey and bergamot tea, mandarin orange peel, peach slices and an elegant citrus blossom tone. There is enough residual sugar to let this age for decades, but it will be best consumed over the next 7-10 years. It has got me daydreaming of blue cheese.

Gård Vintners is 100% estate grown sustainably at Lawrence Vineyards in the Royal Slope AVA. Lawrence Vineyards features seven distinct vineyard sites with elevations ranging 930 feet to 1,675 feet. The combination of elevation and south-facing slope provides a great framework for grape production, while the diversity of the seven locations delivers a high level of complexity to Gård wines. Lawrence Vineyards is certified sustainable by Vinewise.org.

Winemaker Aryn Morell, a Washington native, honed his skills in Napa Valley working with some of the country’s most notable producers, including Silver Oak, Joseph Phelps, Quintessa, Husic, Chimney Rock, Chappellet, Stags Leap and countless others in winemaking and the chemical engineering of wine as part of a consulting company for which he worked.

Aryn joined the Gard team as head winemaker in 2011, and spends considerable time in the winery’s estate vineyard with Josh Lawrence, Gard founder and viticulturist.  With an uncompromising attention to detail, Aryn carefully crafts Gard wines with an eye toward the unique expression of terroir of the estate vineyard, and earns frequent accolades and high acclaim for his wines.

In 2014, Aryn and Gard founders Josh and Lisa Lawrence launched a winemaking facility in Walla Walla, M&L Production, where all the Gård wines are produced, bottled and aged. Aryn also makes wine for Matthews Estate, Tenor, Alleromb and Mullan Road, a Washington project for Cakebread Cellars of California.
