Tasting notes

Citrus, caramelized peach, raw honey and chamomile tea explode on the nose. Swirling brings up lemon drop, citrus blossoms, white tea and honeycomb. The palate has more weight and texture due to the Roussanne, with spice, pithy citrus and stone fruit and a ripe finish. For the second year in a row Roussanne was the star of the vintage, which is why the percentage is unusually high for the Freyja, marking only the second time that Roussanne has been the majority of this blend. We harvested twice, two weeks apart, which allowed for freshness and citrus tones in the first pick and more ripe notes of stone fruit in the second pick. Fermented and aged in stainless steel to maintain crisp and bright aromatics and a more polished mouthfeel.

Production notes
Both the Viognier and Roussanne were picked twice, once on the 24th  of September and the second time the 5 th  of October. A series of frosts in the last few days of Sept to the 9 th  of October caused us to abandon a third pick for this wine and our volume was over 100 cases lower than 2018. For the second year in a row Roussanne was the star of the vintage, which is why the percentage is abnormally high for the Freyja and almost the exact opposite off of the 2018 version. This marks only the second time that Roussanne has been the majority of this blend. The two picks were staggered roughly two weeks apart allowing for freshness and citrus tones in the first pick and more ripe notes of stone fruit in the second picks. Fermented and aged
in stainless steel to maintain crisp and bright aromatics and a more polished mouthfeel.

"You don't often see Roussanne and Viognier blends in Washington at this price point. At this quality level? Never." - Sean P. Sullivan, Wine Enthusiast

91pts - Washington Wine Blog
The 2019 ‘Freyja’ shows pretty honeysuckle tones that connect with shades of pear and nectarine rind and gooseberry on this expressive nose. The freshness is great, as is the silky texture that delivers bright peach and green apple flavors with vanilla cream accents. Enjoy this in its youth while the bright veil of tension remains. Gård Vintners is 100% estate grown sustainably at Lawrence Vineyards in the Royal Slope AVA. Lawrence Vineyards features seven distinct vineyard sites with elevations ranging 930 feet to 1,675 feet. The combination of elevation and south-facing slope provides a great framework for grape production, while the diversity of the seven locations delivers a high level of complexity to Gård wines. Lawrence Vineyards is certified sustainable by Vinewise.org.

Winemaker Aryn Morell, a Washington native, honed his skills in Napa Valley working with some of the country’s most notable producers, including Silver Oak, Joseph Phelps, Quintessa, Husic, Chimney Rock, Chappellet, Stags Leap and countless others in winemaking and the chemical engineering of wine as part of a consulting company for which he worked.

Aryn joined the Gard team as head winemaker in 2011, and spends considerable time in the winery’s estate vineyard with Josh Lawrence, Gard founder and viticulturist.  With an uncompromising attention to detail, Aryn carefully crafts Gard wines with an eye toward the unique expression of terroir of the estate vineyard, and earns frequent accolades and high acclaim for his wines.

In 2014, Aryn and Gard founders Josh and Lisa Lawrence launched a winemaking facility in Walla Walla, M&L Production, where all the Gård wines are produced, bottled and aged. Aryn also makes wine for Matthews Estate, Tenor, Alleromb and Mullan Road, a Washington project for Cakebread Cellars of California.
